The Guillotine and the Cross
Published in Paperback by Trinity Communications (November, 1986)
Author: Warren H. Carroll
Average review score:

Carroll's Guillotine is Sharp!
This book is well researched, organized, and written, but most of all it is INTERESTING to the highest degree! Read the compelling story of the wonderful Carmelite nuns of Compiegne! Highly recommended!!

From Revolution to Regicide, then to Genocide
A wit once remarked that any fool can make history, but only a great man can write one. I'm happy to say that this book proves Warren Carroll such a man. He covers in detail the start of the revolution proper, with the arrest of King Louis XVI, proceeding through the Terror and its aftermath. His style is gripping, telling history as it is meant to be--a living story of a once-alive past. I was especially glad to see a whole chapter devoted to the uprising in the Vendee; these royalists are rarely heard of in today's textbooks, and I myself had not heard of it until early this year. Carroll covers in detail the suppression of Catholicism, along with the slaughter of priests and the martyrdom of the Carmelite sisters upon the Guillotine.

I would only add that Carroll is an obvious sympathizer with the ancien regime, which may make uncomfortable those accustomed to republican sentiment. His work provokes one to wonder just how the American republic contrasted to the French version. This history proves that Republics are not immune from despots and mass murder.

The TRUTH about the French Revolution
This is a great book. It should be subtitled "The TRUTH about the French Revolution". Full of facts and dates, and heavily footnoted so that sources can be referenced, the author paints an indisputable picture of what the French Revolution really was: a chaotic bloodbath in which the Catholic Church and anyone associated with it was brutally persecuted. Carroll totally discounts the modern myth of the French Revolution as an event that simply brought France from monarchy to democracy, by inundating the reader with facts to the contrary; did you know that one of the first people to die in the guillotine was a newspaper reporter? So much for freedom of the press. My only complaint about this book is that it is so full of facts and dates it made it slow to read because I found myself wanting to take notes! This book is truly a powerful weapon for combatting the myths about the French Revolution. The description of the "field of screams" was chilling. Also disturbing was the scene where the animals pulling the death cart refused to enter the square where the guillotine was, because their senses were so repulsed by the blood-soaked ground.

A rather shallow and appropriative book about the Gypsies
I read this book with a great deal of frustration. Some people are unable to empathize with Gypsies for their own sake, and instead impose eurocentric paradigm of 'minority' upon them. They are a wandering people (my mother is a Gypsy), who have been persecuted again and again by those middle-class individuals in Europe and Asia who want to prevent the Gypsy voice from being heard. I just hope that some day whites and Asians will come to have a better sense of the suffering of the Gypsies, instead of indulging in a self-aggrandizing appropriation of their suffering for their own ends.Perhaps it would be best if the plentiful academics were use their imaginations and try to understand what it has been like for the Gypsies as they struggle to negotiate their identity against those priviledged whites whowish to appropriate them.

Hanging Out in Europe

So much better than let's go
This is great. Especially if you are looking for something a little more trendy. Lodging is accurately described. Clubs were all a hit.

Essential for young people
I studied abroad in Paris before I bought this book and must say that I felt a little clueless on where all the cool bars and clubs were. I wish I would have had this book from the beginning. It gives great advice on where to stay and meet people, which is not always easy to figure out in a big city. This book will help you get beyond the boring touristy stuff and help you get the most out of your european vacation.

Perfect for college students =)
I got this book as a going-away gift for my best friend who is studying abroad. She was raving about how useful it has been and how she and her flat mates used it religiously. Then when I went to visit her for spring break, we used the book to find the Best hang outs in England and Spain. The book has honest feedback, helpful maps, commonly-used phrases/lingo, price informations, dress code recommendations, and describes the scenes of all the best places to eat, drink, sleep, sight-see and party.

getting the right stuff
On a late summer trip motoring across Europe, I found this petite pocket guide ooohhh soooo French. Although my thoughts were in English, I could pronounce the local wines, cheeses and restaurant dishes with some confidence. My only foe paw was ordering souffle' glace' expecting a gloriously mile high dessert and instead receiving a delightfully frozen demi cup of ice cream...the souffle' waits for no one, so why wait?

Order this little gem now!

refreshingly useful
What a great little book. It should be required reading for food lovers as well as food servers. For the stiff American tongues, it provides an easy way to correctly order in the best restaurants with confidence and style. Magnifique!

Margo Classe does our homework for us, finding the little gems that even travel agents don't know about. These are small, Mom & Pop places that are not even listed on the Internet. Her other books do the same for Spain, Italy and Britain & Ireland. If only her books covered the world!

This is the best book I've ever used for finding hotels in Paris and Mont-St. Michel. The rooms were great, clean, well located, and the detailed descriptions of each hotel and best rooms were greatly appreciated and right on the money.

Another great guide by this author.
I am the author of Eating & Drinking in France and I have used all of Margo Classe's guides, including Hello France! This guide is thorough and the author adds a personal touch when she describes in detail each hotel she has visited. Hello France! is a must for the independent, budget traveler.

The Hidden Tradition in Europe
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (January, 1995)
Author: Yuri Stoyanov
Average review score:

It will long remain the clasic history of Christian heresy
This fascinating book surveys nearly three thousand years of religious history to reveal the ancient roots of the secret and suppressed teachings of Christian hereticies and sects, namely the enigmatic Cathars and Bogomils. The scope of the book is thus vast, it covers religious developments in a wide-ranging historical and religious context, from Central Asia to Languedoc, describing a multitude of exotic and esoteric doctrines, myths and belief systems as well as secret sects and underground heretical movements. The author of the acclaimed Dictionary of the Khazars, Milorad Pavic, has compared Yuri Stoyanov with Umberto Eco not only for his narrative skills but also for his ablity to integrate in a single whole little known esoteric and heretical traditions extant both in the East and West Christian worlds as well as to chart the uneven flow of religious and spirtual influences emanating from the Asian East. Dilligently researched and elegantly written, this book will long remain the classic study of the secret and apparent roots and history of Christian heresies, sects and cults

Fascinating historical detective study of a hidden world
This superb book offers a fascinating exploration of the hidden world of heresies, sects and cults in late antique and medieval Europe and the Middle East. It is a must reading for everyone interested in the clandestine or esoteric trends in European and Middle eastern religious history; it reveals multitudes of novel insights into European religious development and a wealth of new data about sectarian, cultic and clandestine groups and their history. Compellingly narrated, it will please the most demanding readers and has a telling relevance for a number of new sectarian and esoteric trends in modern religion in Europe, USA, Asia, etc. Critical reading for all lovers of historical, religious and esoteric mysteries

Compelling and highly acclaimed historical narrative.
Since in March, 1995 I organized the book launch of The Hidden Tradition in Europe in London, I have pleasure in presenting here a selection of quotes from reviews of this compelling and widely acclaimed book. You can use some of these quotes in your attractive Web page for the book which undoubtedly will increase its appeal. I hope that you will fund these quotes from reviews useful and will include some of them in your Web page for The Hidden Tradition in Europe. Zorica Radoslavljaic

The History of England: From the Reign of Henry the 4th to the Death of Charles the 1st
Published in Hardcover by Algonquin Books (October, 1993)
Authors: Jane Austen, A. S. Byatt, and Deirdre Le Faye
Average review score:

Austen's brief History of time (and slightly rewritten)
Jane Austen wrote these short snippets on a number of the rulers of England in chronological order - using, as she says, 'very few dates'. The result is a wonderful collection of highly prejudicial outlines of various Kings and Queens - and after all the purpose of history to be scandalous and slanderous can be undermined by sticking too closely to extraneous detail such as dates and so on. The whole thing would probably take you much less than hour to read. Austen proves her talent for sharp observation and wit from an early age for this little book was written while she was still a teenager in the early 1790's. Its a lovely introduction to her writing for those who haven't had much to do with Austen before but are keen to try her out.

She may be "Ignorant," but she's also brilliant
This book may not be used in any history class, but it is one of the most charming works she ever wrote. I had this smile painted on my face the entire 15 minutes it took to read it. Very, very witty.

One of the most amusing pieces in English Literature
Jane Austen may be best known for her biting and sarcastic wit, her compassion for her characters, and her understanding of the truth of their lives and situations. But this short piece of juvenilia combines all of her mature insight with the confidence, humour, and unmitigated self-satisfaction of a younger and more whimsical Austen. Definitely not to be overlooked in favour of her more serious work, this book will take merely minutes to read but leave you with astoundingly funny comments to treasure and smile over for years to come. It is Jane Austen at her very best: uninhibited, cruel, funny and ultimately self-deprecating. She knows what she is doing and does it with consumate skill. A must read for any Austen fan or anyone with a sense of humour.

A History of Ukraine
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Toronto Pr (November, 1996)
Author: Paul Robert Magocsi
Average review score:

Wonderful to read for an understanding of Ukraine
From pre-history to Independence in 1991, this book surveys the history of Ukraine and its people. It is unique in not only portraying the history of the Ukrainian people but also includes the other peoples who live or have lived in the land now known as Ukraine.

The organization of the book is chronological with 49 chapters divided into ten parts. Each part covers a significant period in Ukrainian history: Pre-Kievan Times; the Kievan Period; the Lithuanian-Polish Period; the Cossack State; the Hetmanate; Ukraine in the Russian Empire; Ukraine in the Austrian Empire; World War I; the Interwar Years; and, World War II & the Postwar Years. Forty-two black-and-white maps help illustrate the concepts described in the text. Also included are thirty-six textual inserts which provide lengthy quotes of important documents. Sometimes these feel redundant because the author has described so well the events highlighted by the inserted texts.

For readers to whom 700 pages of Ukrainian history is not enough and who want to learn more about specific events or periods described in this book, Magocsi provides a forty page bibliographic essay called: For Further Reading. One of the great stumbling blocks for English-speaking readers who want to learn Ukrainian history is the fact that so many Ukrainian sources have not been translated. A great feature of this bibliography is that the vast majority of the works listed are in English.

Ukrainian history is complex. This book, although daunting to read because of its size and depth of coverage, can help the student of Ukrainian history untangle the puzzles of Ukraine and its people. It is a great reference work that belongs in the library of anyone interested in the subject.

A History of Ukraine--Magocsi
A beautifully written history of outstanding excellence. I have found it most helpful. Professor Magocsi is to be commended on a another success.

Excellent Reference on Ukrainian History
Mr. Magocsi's "History of Ukraine" often takes a second billing to Mr. Subtelny's "Ukraine: A History" - and I think, unfairly. Both have a lot to offer, and frankly, no passionate student of Ukrainain history should choose one over the other. He or she should get both. A wealth of information, and first rate scholarship are impressive. Mr. Magocsi has done a first rate job. Mychajlo Hrushevsky would approve of both, and we should too.
