The Gate In The Wall
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (April, 1999)
Average review score:

Wonderful!I loved this book. It paints a colorful and touching portrait of the characters, Emma Deane and Mrs. Minshull. They seemed so real, I felt like I'd actually met them both. I cried at least twice! This book also gives a fascinating glimpse of life in another era. Don't miss this book!
Warm story, admirable charactersI enjoyed this book a lot! It reminded me of an American Girl, but with more complex characters. The growing relationship between Emma and Mrs. Minshull, Emma's growing strength (both physical and mental), and her pride in her talent was neatly drawn. And just the right length for young readers! Would have liked more information about the canal life.
A very good book.Ten-year-old Emma is used to working ten hours a day in a silk mill in Victorian England. When she is locked out for being a moment late, and gets a job on a canal boat, her life takes an unexpected turn for the better. I loved this book

German Soldiers of World War Two
Published in Hardcover by Casemate (August, 1996)
Average review score:

Outstanding book detailing WW2 German Military UniformsIf you are remotely interested in WW2 German Military Uniforms you will find this book very interesting and worthwhile. If your interest is more serious then this book is a must have. The authors have put together an outstanding collection of modern day photographs of fully dressed German Soldiers. World War Two is broken down into different sections: '1939-40 The Blitzkrieg Years','1941-From Crete to Moscow', '1942-The Last Victories', '1943-The Turning Point', '1944-Setbacks on all Fronts', '1945-The Last Stronghold'. The actual quality of the photographs is excellent. The way the subjects modelling the uniforms are presented is excellent. The attention to detail is excellent. As a reference for uniforms and equipment of this period, this book is superb. I have only read the book as a passing interest and have been captivated by the detailed photographs. They may have been a fascist regime and guilty of starting a war, but it must be said, the German Soldier certainly had the smartest uniforms of all combatants. I have no doubt, modellers and military enthusiasts will treasure this book. Highly recommended.
PREMIER BOOK OF GERMAN WWII UNIFORMSIf you are an enthusiast about World War two from the German perspective, this book is a must! The authors have compiled the largest collect to date of modern day pictures of original German uniforms and the related equipment. The pictures are not only great but the written compilation that goes with it is excellant. You will not be disappointed even though the cost is very steep.
Great !This books is a must for WWII buffs. The pictures are of men dressed in the correct German uniforms and equiptment used by each of the divisions and are in full color. A detailed description on each uniform is included. Just GREAT !

German Tanks of World War II in Color (Enthusiast Color Series)
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (May, 2000)
Average review score:

PANZERS IN COLORI've read many books about the panzers in WWII. They have many useful information inside them. But they all had old black&white photos and some of them were really bad. But this book is great. It doesn't have so many information, the written things are known by many WWII fans. But what makes this book a 5 star treasure is the pictures. Who doesn't want to see Tigers, Panthers, King Tigers, Jagdpanthers and many more in colorful high quality pictures. The photos are taken from museums and collectors all around the world. When you are looking at the pictures you'll feel the real power of the Panther's 75mm gun and smell its gasoline and hear the roaring engine.
Gem of a BookGerman Tanks of World War II in Color is not an exhaustive study nor does it try to be. However, weighing in at only 96 pages, it contains a surprising amount of information. The book is organized into four chapters: light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks and support vehicles. All of the main panzers and armored fighting vehicles are discussed as well as their variants. The text is readable and informative. Text boxes add depth to the book by discussing tank anatomy, panzer division anatomy, weapon definitions, and color schemes. What truly makes this book unique are the color photographs of restored vehicles from museums and private collections around the world. The photo on the front cover is indicative of the eye-candy that awaits you inside. Recommended!
A great value. This book packs a lot of information into its 96 pages. It's possible to find books on German Armor that have more detail, but not at this price. Brief but useful development histories are complemented by scores of high quality color photographs. Each of the Panzer series (I through VI) is featured, including most of the important variants (Tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery pieces). There is even a chapter on amored cars, halftracks, and reconnaissance vehicles. The text is good, but it is the photographs that set this book apart. Vintage snaps are coupled with shots of restored vehicles from museums and private collections around the world. I would recommend this book to modelers and history buffs alike.

The Globalisation of Poverty: Impacts of Imf and World Bank Reforms
Published in Paperback by Zed Books (September, 1997)
Average review score:

Timely thoughts from a real economistFree thinking economists such as Mr Chossudovsky are few and far between. Please take the time to read about the reality of what we have been lured into.
Very Good thoughts on the eve of the MillenniumThese are some wonderful thougts that have stimulated my mind into asking the question "CanAfricansThink?".This book exposes the disguise of mainstream economics which leaves human society's precious values at the hands of economic lust. All Africans need to know about this big con job being operated under the disguise of macro economics.
A devastating critique of neoliberalismLooking at case studies from around the developing world, backed up with a strong theoretical analysis of the IMF and World Bank's role in the international economy, the globalisation of poverty brings the reader to one stark conclusion: 'Poverty is an input on the supply side, (of the global economy.)' Particularly interesting is Chossudovsky's explanation of the economic 'miracle' of Vietnam, while his analysis of the Yugoslav disaster, co-sponsored by the IMF and international financial investors, is very timely indeed. As Chossudovsky explains, the IMF and World Bank reforms have not merely suppressed populist and socialist economic measures and achievements; they have also prevented the development of national capitalisms, by creating economies directed towards the needs of the capitalist core states, rather than to the national market. For those harbouring any illusions about the economic order which governs humanity at the end of this century, this book is a necessary read. It's a pity that Chossudovsky works at the University of Ottawa and not the LSE, an institution that definitely needs realistic economists like him.

Gods, Heroes, and Kings: The Battle for Mythic Britain
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (September, 2001)
Average review score:

Highly RecommendedDrs. Christopher Fee and David Leeming have crafted an extraordinary work examining the marriage of Celtic, Germanic, and Norse cultures and religious beliefs in Britain (particularly as they are seen via the literary traditions that chronicled them) in an effort to understand how the impact of pre-Christian peoples influenced the unique Christianity of Medieval Britain. While Dr. Leeming has provided extensive retellings of pagan myths, Dr. Fee has written insightful analyses of these myths and their import to the creation of a British religious ideology. Beginning with a scrutiny of the various pagan pantheons, the work then moves through detailed examinations of, among other things, types of deities, heroes and heroines, and the different sagas of the individual cultures. As an apocalypticist, I found the retellings and subsequent commentaries on Ragnarok and the Anglo-Saxon Fire of Judgment immensely informative and useful.
This is an extraordinarily accessible book. It is intended for the non-specialist and, as such, would be perfect for an undergraduate survey course, for an upper-level topical course on British mythology/religion, or for any scholar seeking an understanding of Britain's pre-Christian culture. I would also recommend it highly as a handbook for any medievalist who needs quick and informed accounts of any and all of these topics. Not only have Drs. Fee and Leeming eloquently opened up the field of pagan Britain to further inquiry and discussion, but they have done so in a work that is, above all, easy and enjoyable to read.

Excellent! This book is a great read. It's obviously well-researched, and filled with intriguing facts. Furthermore, Fee has a writing style that draws the reader in and keeps him/her interested throughout. Highly recommended!
Great readreally intersting read with lots of interesting facts, not for the faint hearted, makes you think and relise alot of different things

Goli Otok-Island of Death
Published in Hardcover by East European Monographs (15 October, 1984)
Average review score:

Astonishing! What a horrible life these people had to have in Yugoslavia, struggling for their life under Tito's communist killers.
Shocking book about Tito's YugoslaviaThe book shows the view of one of the creators of the Macedonian alphabet, who was sentenced to 5 years in the concentration camp Goli Otok (Naked Island) in Yugoslavia between 1956-1961. It gives dark but truthful description of the conditions in which the POLITICAL prisoners were held. A book one must read before visiting ex-Yugoslavia
incredible.a fascinating book which deals with the suffering croatians faced during Tito's regime, a subject few contemporary writers approach. an insight into the heart of communist darkness.

The Great Famine and the Irish Diaspora in America
Published in Paperback by Univ. of Massachusetts Press (February, 1999)
Average review score:

A fascinating collection of essays . . .A fascinating collection of essays that reveals, often in unexpected ways, the effects of the Irish famine on both sides of the Atlantic. Ranging from the loss of life to the loss of music among the Irish peasantry, from the pages of the Dublin University Magazine to the pages of American newspapers, from Chef Alex Soyer's famine soup to the famine graves at Grosse Ile, from Irish memory to Irish American rage, this scholarly but readable book provides us with the broadest understanding of this far-reaching event. (William H. A. Williams, author of 'Twas Only an Irishman's Dream)
A major contribution to its field! This book is a major contribution to its field. It contains important details that are missing from many of the previous works on the subject of the famine. The scholarship is sound and is often based on primary sources that have never been examined in this context before. The data are consistently compelling, fresh, and well documented. . . Any college with an Irish studies program will find the book indispensable. (Mary Ellen Cohane, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts)
The only book to trace linkage between U.S. and IrelandAs a contributor to this volume on the Great Famine in Ireland, I think that this book makes an important contribution to the historiography of the Famine insofar as it may be the only volume to trace the linkage between the U.S. and Ireland during that tragic era. Greece from the Air
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (October, 1997)
Average review score:

Beautiful bird's eye view of GreeceWhether or not you've been to Greece, a breeze through this book gives you a feeling of being there, taking you to the country's most popular and beautiful sites from a perspective unavailable to most. Although the colors and uniqueness are difficult to portray, this comes very close. The photo of Zakynthos made me cry, and the photo of a village wedding stirred my soul. It is a beloved addition to my collection, and an album of understanding for those who have never seen it in person--simply look through its pages and see Greece.
I give this book 5 stars for what it presents, but I think the true heart of Greece lies not only in the chalk-white cliffs and Greek blue waters, but also in its people (which of course are difficult to photograph from the air!).
Absolutely mind-bogglingly beautiful photosI have never in my life seen such absolutely incredible photos. If you want to see Greece at its absolute best, nothing else can compare. There are a number of photos here that by themselves are worth the price of the book. I can never recall having a book that is as captivating the 100th time I look through it as the first time. The picture of the fisherman in his boat seemingly floating on air is just simply the most amazing photo I've ever seen.
If you have any friends or relatives who are Greek or have been to Greece, this is absolutely the best gift you can give them.
MagnificentI especially like shots that include the Mediterranean, which can be mind-bogglingly blue. Even those parts of Greece that look barren and stony when you're on the ground take on a whole new texture and beauty when photographed from the air.

GREECE: THE PELOPONNESE
Published in Paperback by Cadogan Guides (01 June, 2000)
Average review score:

Essential guideI used this guide for my recent vacation in Greece. It's wonderful. We spent nearly all of our time in the Peloponnese and enjoyed it very much. The book gives the mythology of each area in a lively style, which added to my pleasure in what I was seeing. We would know what to watch out for before we boarded the bus, train, or taxi. For example, between Nafplio and Epidaurus we saw the bridge from Mycenaean times, after being in Mycenae two days earlier. The Peloponnese is the setting for a great many of the Greek myths, and this guide made it easy to match the story to the place. Also the maps by area - sort of like our county - were excellent.
I would not use this for practicalities of travel, but instead to get you excited about going and about being there. If you pair it with a guide to hotels, restaurants, and transportation, you can have a fabulous vacation. I'm hoping to go again, since there is much that we didn't have time for in 13 days.

An absolute mustAn absolute absolute must for anyone going to the Peloponnese, 'the garden of Greece.' Facaros and Theodorou have obviously been up every little by way and thanks to their guidance we found at least a dozen stunning little villages and ancient sites and quirky old churches that no other guides even mention (and we had the Rough Guide and Blue Guide in the car as well). Their in depth knowledge and humour helped us get so much more out of our holiday, and even we who have lived just outside Athens for the past eight years were surprised at all the stuff we didn't know. The restaurant and hotel recommendations were spot on, too, and led us to some places (especially in the mountains) that we never would have found on our own, where nightingales serenaded us to sleep. The only complaint is that there were n't enough site plans, but it's a minor gripe. An excellent guide, and a great read.
The Untourist's GreeceAlthough Greece is thronged with tourists, most of them spend a few days in Athens and then head for the islands. Only a few cross the Corinth Canal into the wild and fascinating island of the Peloponnese, and then only to visit the ruins of Olympia or Sparta. Yet beyond these is a barren, beautiful, and friendly land, heretore neglected by guidebooks. Facaros' "Greece: The Peloponnese" fills this gap, constituting a complete guide to the attractions, accommodations, and geography of this area. It is complete, covering virtually every village, full of historical tidbits, and packed with useful information about hotels, restaurants, good beaches, and, of course, the many ruins dotting this home of ancient Greece. Geared to the independent tourist, its recommendations for food and lodging are tailored to all budgets. This book is the one to read before you go, and take with you; it was invaluable on a recent trip to the region. Go to the Peloponnese before it's discovered (a recent New York Times blurb will hasten that) and take Facaros' book with you. (Note: ancient-history mavens will also want to take "The Blue Guide to Greece", as "Greece: the Peloponnese" does not go into excruciating detail about the many ruins of the island.)

Greeks in India: A Survey in Philosophical Understanding
Published in Hardcover by Munshirm Manoharlal (May, 2000)
Average review score:

A link between East and WestThis book links the European and Indian Histories from the earliest days up to the present and helped me to understand the connection between Greek and Indian cultures especially during the Indo-Greek kingdoms. The article on Galanos brings new light in the previous researches on the pioneer Greek indologist and the chapter on the contemporary Greeks in India is very balanced and objective. I strongly recommend this book to all those who are interested to learn more about the cultural history of the Greeks in India
ExcellentThis book covers the entire history of the Greek cultural impact in the Indian civilization. I found it very helpful in understanding the connection between the ancient Greek and Indian philosophies and cultures.
Everything you ever wanted to know about ancient IndogreeksThis is a scholarly book on a historical topic that is rather difficult to research. Who were the ancient Indogreeks and what role did they play in history? What were the philosophical analogies between Greece and India? The sources are relatively few and obscure, and there is much speculation on the subject. The author has researched the subject meticulously from ancient Greek and Sanskrit sources.
Several years ago, other historians, such as Tarn, have published on the topic. This is a fresh view with a philosophical twist that deserves study and understanding.
